The ancient city of Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province, and lies on the south bank of the famous Yangtze river. Over two thousand years of history sits alongside the city’s modern side, where skyscrapers and shopping malls are just round the corner from temples, palaces and relics from ancient dynasties. History buffs should pay a visit to the Presidential Palace of Nanjing, with historical roots stretching back to the Ming Dynasty who ruled China between 1368 and 1644. The Confucius Temple, originally constructed in 1034 is a beautiful building paying testament to the wisdom of Confucianism. Surrounding the temple are many buildings constructed in the traditional Chinese architectural style, with winding markets, restaurants and coffee shops where you can sit by the canal and watch the world go by in this enchanting city.
Nanjing has a metro system that operates two lines with two different points of interchange. Running from early morning to late evening, metro travel is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of navigating the city. There is also a bus system that runs several tourist routes, as well as a series of night buses that operate around twice per hour outside normal hours of operation. If you’re befuddled by the public transport, you can always hop in one of the many taxis that circulate the city. Make sure that you have the address written in Chinese so the taxi driver can get you to your destination without confusion.
Nanjing Lukou International Airport (NKG) is located 22 miles (35 km) from the city centre. There are several options for getting into the city from the airport. A subway line connects the airport with several central stations, including both the North and South railway stations and the Xihua Gate, Yuhua Square and Cuipingshan Hotel stations. Others may choose to take a taxi from the airport, which is a 30 minute journey. There are also two bus routes that operate from the airport to the city, and you will be required to change at the railway station to take a connecting bus to the city centre.
